Treating Varicose and Spider Veins on Your Breasts

Veins are important blood vessels located beneath the surface of the skin all over the body, including on the breasts. Although these vessels are not usually visible, they can become noticeable in some cases. In most cases, noticeable veins on the breasts are either varicose veins or spider veins. Although they are more common on the legs, they can appear on the breasts as well.

Things You Should Know About the Veins on Your Breasts

Like veins in all parts of the body, the veins in your breasts play an important role in maintaining tissue health. However, certain circumstances can damage these veins, causing them to become spider veins or varicose veins.  Both of these types of abnormal veins are caused by impaired function of the valves inside the vessels. Spider veins and varicose veins typically appear as blue veins on breasts.

What Causes Veins in Breasts to Be More Visible?

They are more common among women who have experienced hormonal changes because of pregnancy, menstruation or oral contraceptives. These changes can result in increased blood volume, enlarged breasts and more visible veins. Breastfeeding may also cause spider veins and varicose veins on the breasts, as the breasts must enlarge to accommodate milk production. In these cases, breast veins often return to normal once the situation has resolved.  Other possible causes of varicose veins and spider veins on the breasts include a history of sun damage, breast augmentation surgery or breast cancer. Likewise, as you age, your skin will become thinner, which can cause your veins to appear more prominent. Finally, certain diseases or conditions that cause inflammation in the breasts may lead to spider veins and varicose veins as well.

What Do Blue Veins on Your Breasts Mean?

Blue veins on your breasts indicate that valves within your breast veins are likely malfunctioning. They may also indicate swelling in the breasts, an increase in blood volume or thinning of your skin. Regardless of the circumstances, treatment may be available for visible veins breasts.  Treating the visible veins in your breasts requires a visit to a vein specialist. Your vein specialist will examine your abnormal veins to determine which type of treatment is best for you. Treatments can improve the appearance of these veins, boost your confidence and alleviate any discomfort. In most cases, varicose veins and spider veins on the breasts can be treated with minimally invasive procedures that require no general anesthesia and very little downtime.  If you have noticed blue veins on your breast, you don’t have to continue living with this condition.
