Got Varicose Veins? Consider Endovenous Laser Ablation

Endovenous laser ablation uses the power of laser light energy to treat varicose veins. It is a non-surgical, virtually pain-free procedure, which safely and effectively treats varicose veins. Varicose veins are those twisted, bulging, blue or red rope-like veins that ruin the smooth appearance of the skin on the backs of your legs. While varicose veins are primarily a cosmetic problem, these diseased veins can also cause an aching pain, swelling, and inflammation in the veins. Left untreated, varicose veins can cause skin discoloration and even painful sores near your ankles, in some cases.

Boca Raton Vein Doctor Discusses Endovenous Laser Ablation for Varicose Veins

There are no special preparations for endovenous laser ablation. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to expose the skin on the treatment area. Remove any jewelry in the treatment area, such as ankle bracelets. Plan to have a friend drive you home. Before undergoing the procedure, you will discuss your expectations with your venous surgeons. Be sure to tell your vein doctor about any medications you are taking, including herbal supplements, and follow the surgeon’s recommendations for medications prior to the procedure. A vein doctor performs endovenous laser ablation for varicose vein treatment at an outpatient clinic. The venous surgeon uses an ultrasound to locate and identify the abnormal vein. The clinician then uses ultrasound guidance to insert a tiny laser fiber into the affected vein. The practitioner then activates the laser and slowly withdraws the fiber. Energy from the laser irritates the interior lining of the affected blood vessel, and this irritation causes the vein to close. Your circulatory system routes blood through other veins. In time, the treated vein breaks apart and nearby tissue absorbs the remnants. The treated varicose vein eventually fades from view. Endovenous laser ablation takes less than an hour. You can get up and walk around immediately after endovenous laser ablation; in fact, your vein doctor will encourage walking to stimulate blood flow and promote healing. You can go home right away, and resume normal activities. Avoid strenuous physical activity for the first couple of days to give the treated area time to heal; stay out of saunas or very hot baths for a few days. Wear compression stockings as directed by your vein doctor, as this special hosiery pushes blood up and out of the treated vein to promote healing. The procedure leaves virtually no scars. Endovenous laser ablation is safe and effective for most people but, as with all medical procedures, may not be right for everyone. Talk with your Boca Raton vein doctor about your varicose veins to learn if endovenous laser ablation is right for you.
