Hi everyone! Julie here…and I can’t tell you how many times I have heard that from our patients! You would think that living in South Florida where it’s almost always flip flop season, that wearing shorts would be routine. For some people with large, bulging varicose veins or extensive spider veins, that is just not the case. Many people in our local area are too embarrassed to show their legs in public and have resigned themselves to always wearing long pants to cover up an embarrassing physical trait. Last summer, I was out shopping when I observed what appeared to be a Mother – Daughter pair looking at clothes. Mom was trying to get her young daughter to buy a really cute, flirty dress. The daughter, however, was adamant that she would never be caught dead in a dress because of her veins. While trying not to eavesdrop on them, I could not help but take a peek down. Sure enough, she was wearing jeans in the middle of summer in South Florida! Mom did not seem to have the same inhibitions because she wore khaki shorts just above the knee revealing a road map of her venous system. I was certainly tempted to intrude on their conversation with an “excuse me, but we can help you with that”. I would never do that, of course, but everyone should know that there is a solution for varicose veins and spider veins.
